  • Description
This exquisite Delftware-pine Gaiwan shows a detailed and harmonious scene steeped in classical Chinese culture. The main body depicts a serene landscape where a lot of graceful pine trees, symbolizing longevity and resilience, dominates the composition. Beneath the tree, an elder is delicately playing the guqin (a traditional stringed instrument), immersed in the music, occasionally engaged in lively conversation with companions. Nearby, a pot of freshly brewed tea signifies hospitality and refinement, enhancing the atmosphere of intellectual exchange and relaxation.

The surface of this Delftware-pine Gaiwan is entirely covered by a panoramic scene of endless, rolling mountains. These mountains are thickly forested with countless pine trees. The pines are meticulously painted with detailed needles and strong, rugged trunks, showcasing the classic techniques of blue and white porcelain artistry. In Chinese culture, the pine tree is traditionally known as one of the "Three Friends of Winter", alongside the bamboo and the plum, admired for its resilience to thrive in harsh conditions. The lid of the bowl is intricately designed with a matching pine tree pattern, crafted with precise brushstrokes characteristic of traditional blue and white porcelain techniques.
The piece is then covered with a transparent glaze and fired at high temperatures in Jingdezhen kiln, usually above 1300°C. This process not only vitrifies the porcelain, giving it strength and translucency, but also allows the cobalt pigment to develop into its iconic deep blue color beneath the glaze. The result is a durable yet refined piece that blends artistry and functionality.

The gaiwan, also known as the “three-piece tea cup,” is traditionally used in Chinese tea culture. It consists of a bowl for brewing tea leaves, a lid for controlling heat and aroma, and a saucer for ease of handling. The gaiwan is prized for its versatility—it can be used both to brew and to drink tea directly. Its design allows tea drinkers to appreciate the aroma, color, and flavor of the infusion with elegance and precision.
